Social justice falls to the states now more than ever, because the federal government clearly does not share our progressive values. I believe that a civilized society has the responsibility to respect, protect, and promote the health and safety of its residents, and that personal success is rooted in access to education, economic opportunity, financial security, safety from violence and the authority to make responsible personal and family decisions. My priorities include –
EDUCATION
- State funding that reflects regional costs of education
- Early education, special education, adult education, and ESOL programs
- Improved computer and information technology education
- Responsible sex education to teach the facts about STDs and contraception
HEALTH CARE
- Universal insurance coverage, with the right to prescription drug coverage and patient choice of doctors
- Protect the right to obtain a safe, legal abortion
- Increased access to emergency contraception
- Fund family planning services
QUALITY OF LIFE
- Legal protections for victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, and child abuse
- Strong gun control measures, including gun safety standards and a ban on assault weapons
- Green buildings, affordable housing, accessible housing
- Energy policies that protect consumers, promote energy efficiency, and reduce environmental impact
- Public transit, including the Inner Purple Line, to reduce congestion and pollution
